Sally Burnett

Looking at the work of Sally Burnett, I found it hard to believe that her beautifully decorated vessels are actually turned from Wood. They look far too delicate. I had imagined porcelain or some other fine ceramics.

Sally initially trained in 3D design and began specialising in hand blown glass and large ceramic tile installations.  She only ventured into the possibilities of wood turning when a friend gave her a lathe.   After receiving a Bursary from the Worshipful Company of Turners and participating in the UK Craft Council ‘Hot House’ scheme for emerging makers.  Sally has never looked back.  Her unique designs can now be found several UK Galleries and private collections.

Turning wood is a combination of ancient practical skills.  Sally uses mainly English native ‘green’ timber in her work.  The skill of turning wood is to make the most of the grain and structure that is exposed.

As the vessels dry out there is often distortion with circular forms becoming oval.  This only adds to the individuality of the pieces and creates a unique design.
