Inspirational designers of 2016
BYUNG KIM
The most quirky new ceramic designer I met this year was BYUNG KIM . His fun designs are in-fact practical, he reassured me – the teapots as well as being very sculptural can also pour a cup of tea. Although I must admit I would rather just admire their beauty than use them at tea time.
STUART AKROYD
My next choice is for the most beautiful hand crafted glass I have seen this year is STUART AKROYD. His sculptural creations, exhibited at The London Design Festival in at The Truman Brewery in October, were the highlight of the show for me. From bowls and vases to beautiful wall art and illuminated sculptures each piece is hand crafted to create his outstanding world-class designs.
ROBERT SCOTT
Some of the most amazing British furniture designers were on show at The Celebration of Craftmanship and Design in Cheltenham this August. One of the most memorable and creative designers being ROBERT SCOTT, featured on an earlier blog this year. The beautiful lines of his tables sculpted in Ash were inspired by the erosion of rock by the elements.
ANE CHRISTENSEN
My next accolade for the best designer and maker in metal goes to ANE CHRISTENSEN – these bowls were on show at Made in London in October this year. Her work features perfect curves combined with geometric shapes, all created with perfect precision.
DEAN PATMAN
For the best of recycled art, I found two craftsmen this year whose creations intrigued me. The first being DEAN PATMAN for the most bizzare and wonderful insects and animals I have ever seen. Dean works from a shed-studio in his garden and sculpts the most amazing menagerie of creatures from found materials such as shoe-trees and silverware.
DAN RAWLINGS
The second of my favourite artists creating recycled art was also on show at The Affordable Art Fair in Battersea in October . This original and talented sculptor DAN RAWLINGS had also used metal to sculpt his designs, this time cutting into metal to create his art. This beautiful shadow sculpture was created from an old gas canister and the artwork below from an old vintage wood saw.
