The Pineapple is the New Cactus

The Cactus is the new Pineapple

Ok – I don’t know where I heard this first, but I love the fact that we can have fun with home accessories.  Pineapples have been a strong design contender in homewares accessories – but this year it looks as if the Cactus is taking over the spot light.

What great news for all us trend setting plant lovers. Cacti are the most forgiving of houseplants, needing little water and adjusting to about any kind of environment. Too little sunlight, too much sunlight – this prehistoric hardy prickly plant can handle it all.

Most Cacti originate from North, Central and South America.  They can be found growing wild in deserts, rainforests and jungles.  The little Cacti that you see in tiny pots are all ready 3 years old.  So with the time it takes to grow the larger plants it’s not surprising that they are not available in abundance.  With larger, sought after Cacti selling at a high price tag.

Cactus Boutiques

Last year Gynelle Leon picked up on the new Cactus trend and opened ‘Prick’ the first Cacti Boutique in London.  Her store sells over 150 types of Cacti and succulents. The Conran shop has also just launched The Green Store in their Chelsea shop window – and yes, you guessed it, it’s full of the prickly plants.

Rounding up the best buys on the High Street

So take a look at our collection of succulent designs below.  We started the trail at Graham and Green with these funky Cactus vases from £15.95 – £24.95 .  The table lamp is £55 ( although I am not keen on the shade and may change that to a plain colour instead).  For some crazy reason I have fallen in love with these salt and pepper pots, £20 .

My next prickly finds are at Not on The High Street  – a great place to find some unique creations. The wall paper by Hibou Home at £59.95 a roll is perfect for a kiddies bedroom.  The Tequilla set by Bespoke Barware, £45 looks quite retro and the cute little  jar is from Bonnie and Bell  £26 .

My next stop was at Oliver Bonas.  I love their jewellery and they also do some great stands – here their Cactus  inspired jewellery stand is £26.  They have added a bit more bling to the cactus with this gold print on their glass ware. The carafe is £12.50 and matching tumbler £5 .

This funky Cactus Margarita glass £18.50  is from Rockett St George .  The 21cm cactus candle is online at SCP £26.  If you can’t go for the real-thing, there are several retailer selling Faux Cacti. These plants are really quite sculptural and the faux variety can look as good as the real thing.  This potted Faux cactus £185 is 120cm tall at Graham and Green.

This cool Neon light is supported on a concrete block makes quite a statement –  45cm high , £63 .  And for the swimming pool in the garden (as I know everyone has one) there is the inflatable pool float £46.50 .  Both these funky finds are from Graham and Green

A great print that embraces the pink interior trend is our final find £65 at Rose and Grey .

It’s great if you want to go for the real thing.  Although it’s hard to find a good selection in your local garden centre, look online.  Online stores that specialise in the prickly plants are Cactus Land , Uk’s largest Cactus Nursery.  Also rare and unusual Cacti are to be found at Cactusuk .    So that finishes our round up of the best on the High Street – now just off for a shop. Let me see – where did I see that Cactus salt and pepper pot ?
